"And he dwells in complete ascendancy over the wide earth from sea to sea, ruling it in righteousness without the need of baton or of sword." (Ambattha Sutta 1:5, from the Digha Nikaya of Buddhism).
On numerous occasions, the Digha Nikaya describes the characteristics of a transcendent kingdom where there is an absence of violence or coercion on the part of the ruler. Costa Rica is 1 of the few examples of a contemporary nation that exists without a military. Can you even just imagine the existence of a society where even the threat of violence is a very rare occurrence?
